2016 High Desert Design Council Award Winner - Best Landscape Design
SZABO Landscape Architecture worked closely with the owner and design team to develop the exterior pool and spa area for this boutique resort hotel. SZABO teamed with architect Darren Thomas to site and size the building and program the exterior spaces.
The pool was sited on the southwest side of the building to take advantage of mountain views and afternoon sun. The existing 1.1-acre site gently slopes from north to south, creating opportunities for tiered outdoor lounge spaces. A cabana deck, made from Brazilian hardwood, sits at the highest point of the site, overlooking the crisp lines of the heated contemporary pool. A 40-foot-wide gentle staircase steps down from the second lounge terrace to the heated pool deck, where the new recreation center building houses a café which opens onto the pool area. The equipment room is dressed with a green roof, an outdoor shower, and a raised planter with seat walls. A mix of contemporary and traditional materials were used throughout the pool to blend the existing Northwest lodge-style of the resort with a modern spa feel. Firepits and deep seating are located throughout the pool. Custom drainage details, custom engraved pool coping, stone and glass tile detailing around the pool, and a variety of seating and lounging opportunities give this small space an elegant and timeless feel.
